East London Eco-Hub

Balfron Tower
Brownfield Estate in Poplar is the site of the East London C-Change Eco-hub. It is about to benefit from a major regeneration programme led by the social landlord, Poplar Harca and Leaside Regeneration.  The estate houses over 1000 residents, is Grade 2 listed and is of great architectural significance being home to Balfron Tower (left) an Erno Goldfinger classic built in 1965.

A two floor community centre on the estate will be assessed for 'future-proofing'. Potentially incorporating renewable and energy efficient heating systems, photo-voltaic cells, solar water heating, and green walls and roofs. It will act as an exemplar to the communities of east London and be used for educational programmes for the local community, particularly for young people, who will be central to the creation of the eco-hub and drive the changes. The centre also has an existing garden space that will be transformed to demonstrate practical responses to climate change including drought resistant planting, grey water reuse, sustainable urban drainage systems and local food growing.

The centre and the garden will act as an exemplar to the communities of east London and be used to bring about greater awareness and understanding of climate change and how our urban environment can help us to mitigate and adapt to climate change. Groundwork is currently working with our partners to develop the eco-hub plans and designs.
