Sloterplas: Sustainable Urban Meeting Place

Food Growing : Nieuw-West Amsterdam
Food-growing spaces have been incredibly successful in City district Nieuw-west. There are a range of different initiatives being delivered by residents, enterprises, housing associations and The Museum of Fine Arts. These have resulted in a whole host of vibrant food growing spaces in the neighbourhood including an orchard, seven 'kitchen gardens', an art project with a kitchen and a number of small plots of land rented out by the museum of fine arts to local residents to grow vegetables, which has transformed the so called watch green. The new food-growing spaces improve social cohesion and healthy lifestyles as well as helping to inform and involve people in climate change adaptation and mitigation on this community scale. Creative Urbans: Healthy Climate WeZt
Who are the Creative Urbans? Hear it from them on u tube. Find out more about their final exhibition held in June 2011.

Healthy Climate WeZt is a project with over 30 student participants from schools in the boroughs around the Sloterplas. Over the course of 25 weeks they have been trained to develop a spatial planning approach for one of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the Sloterplas area: Buurt 5, with very poor quality open spaces.

The program is embedded in their school curriculum. It covers issues like sustainable energy, clean water and other aspects of climate change. The relationship between spatial planning and low carbon, low impact, healthy life styles is also introduced to them. They are challenged to find ways to incorporate these complex issues into their spatial plans for the neighbourhood. This is been an innovative way to engage young people in climate change and spatial planning issues and to develop innovative spatial planning solutions alongside local young people.
Creative Urbans 2010

They came together 24 times in this first part of the project, every Wednesday evening and Sunday. Three designs for a specific location were developed and a professional panel chose the winning design for the Lodewijk van Deysselbuurt in Buurt 5.  Download the project report here it's a large file and may take a few seconds to download.
